The Attorney-General, The Hon Mark Dreyfus KC, recently issued a statement about funding for the Administrative Review Tribunal to establish a fully operational registry in Darwin.
The Northen Territory is currently the only Australian state or territory without its own Tribunal registry.
At present, there is one member based in Darwin. Most applications from Territorians to review government decisions are heard virtually by members in other capital cities. These cases are managed out of Adelaide.
In his statement, the Attorney-General discussed separate funding for an Australia-wide First Nations liaison program to address barriers in accessing justice. The program will provide support and raise awareness of independent merits review with Traditional Owners.
The Tribunal will provide further details about the expanded services as soon as possible.
Further information about the funding for these initiatives is available on the Attorney-General’s portfolio website.
