About the IAA
The IAA was established in April 2015, as a separate office within the Refugee Review Tribunal. From 1 July 2015, the IAA became an independent authority within the Migration and Refugee Division of the AAT.
The role of the IAA was to conduct reviews of fast track reviewable decisions. Fast track reviewable decisions were those decisions made by the Minister for Immigration, or delegate, to refuse to grant a protection visa to a fast track applicant.
Information for former fast track applicants
Any cases still active with the IAA (not yet decided) on 14 October 2024 were transferred to the Tribunal for continuation of review. We have written to applicants whose cases were transferred confirming the transfer has taken place and providing them with a new case reference number. We will continue to send transferred applicants information and notifications about their cases.
Information about the protection visa review process is available under Immigration and citizenship.
Please contact us if you have questions about your transferred case.
All decisions made by the former IAA remain valid and final. If the IAA has already reviewed your case, it is considered finalised and will not be considered again by the Tribunal.
The IAA decision notification letter contains information about your visa status and lodging a judicial review application.
If you have already lodged an application for judicial review of an IAA decision with a Court, that process will continue.
If you have questions about your application with the Courts, please contact the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia on 1300 352 000 or via their website.
If you are looking for information about the status of your visa, you can contact the Department of Home Affairs on 131 881 or via their website.
